Terms of Service

Last updated: September 28, 2026

1. Who We Are

TheCipherLab ("TheCipherLab," "we," "us," or "our") operates an online cybersecurity education platform (the "Service") at thecipherlab.thebasi.com. TheCipherLab is owned and operated by Bassey Elijah Prince, trading as TheCipherLab.

By creating an account, subscribing, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility and Age Requirements

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. We do not permit accounts for anyone under 13.

If you are between 13 and 17 (or below the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction, if different), you must confirm at signup that a parent or legal guardian consents to your use of the Service, including any subscription payment.

Subscribing to the paid tier requires payment via Paystack, which requires the payer's own valid payment method. If you are under 18, this payment should be made by, or with the direct involvement of, your parent or guardian.

By using the Service, you represent that the above is true, or that a parent or guardian has reviewed and consented to these Terms on your behalf.

3. The Service We Provide

Phase 0 (Foundations) is available at no cost, without requiring payment information.

A single monthly subscription unlocks Phases 1 through 5, all video lessons, the AI tutor, graded assignments and CBT quizzes, rank progression, certificates, and the ability to request live 1:1 sessions.

Pricing is displayed in your local currency where available, and billed via Paystack.

We may add, modify, or discontinue features of the Service over time. We will make reasonable efforts to notify active subscribers of material changes that reduce the value of the paid tier.

4. Educational Purpose and Acceptable Use

TheCipherLab teaches real, practical cybersecurity skills, including offensive security techniques such as penetration testing, exploitation, and privilege escalation. How you use this knowledge matters, both to us and legally to you.

4.1 Authorized Use Only

Every offensive technique taught on this platform is designed for use exclusively against:

You agree that you will never use any technique, tool, or knowledge gained through this Service against any system without clear, prior, documented authorization from that system's owner.

4.2 Consequences of Misuse

Unauthorized access to computer systems is illegal in most jurisdictions, regardless of intent. TheCipherLab disclaims all liability for unauthorized or illegal use of skills, tools, or knowledge obtained through the Service, and reserves the right to immediately suspend or terminate any account reasonably suspected of facilitating unauthorized access, harassment, or other illegal activity, without refund. We may cooperate with law enforcement where legally required.

4.3 General Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

5. Accounts and Subscriptions

5.1 Account Registration

You are responsible for maintaining accurate account information and for all activity under your account. Notify us immediately at thecipherlab.support@gmail.com if you suspect unauthorized use of your account.

5.2 Billing

Paid subscriptions are billed in advance, in your selected currency, via Paystack. For subscriptions where automatic recurring billing is enabled for your plan and currency, by subscribing you authorize Paystack to charge your saved payment method automatically each billing period until you cancel, and your account page will show that your subscription renews automatically. For subscriptions where automatic recurring billing is not yet enabled for your plan or currency — including a discounted first billing period under a promotional offer — nothing is charged automatically; you'll need to return to the Service and make a new payment before the end of your current period to keep uninterrupted access, and your account page will say so plainly rather than imply an automatic renewal that will not happen.

5.3 Cancellation and Refunds

You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account settings. For a subscription on automatic recurring billing, cancelling stops the next automatic charge from Paystack. For a subscription not on automatic recurring billing, cancelling simply confirms you won't be returning to pay for another period. Either way, you retain access to paid features until the end of your current billing period.

We do not provide prorated refunds for the unused portion of a billing period you have already paid for.

If the Service fails on our end — for example, payment succeeds but access is not granted, there is a major platform outage, or a billing error occurs — you are entitled to a full or partial refund corresponding to the period affected. Contact thecipherlab.support@gmail.com to request this.

5.4 Price Changes

We may change subscription pricing with reasonable advance notice. Continued use after a price change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the new price.

6. Assignments, Grading, and AI Use

6.1 Automated Grading

Most assignments are graded automatically by our AI grading system, which evaluates submissions against the specific rubric published for that assignment and generates feedback referencing the criteria your submission met or missed.

6.2 Human Review

Submissions our system flags as ambiguous, borderline, or outside its confidence threshold are escalated to human review before a final grade is confirmed. If you believe an automated grade is incorrect, you may raise this through the AI tutor; unresolved disputes are escalated to a human reviewer.

6.3 Your Submissions

You retain ownership of the work you submit. By submitting an assignment, you grant TheCipherLab a license to store, process — including via our AI grading system — and display that submission back to you and, where applicable, a human reviewer, for the purpose of grading and providing feedback.

6.4 Data Retention for Submissions

Your grade and written feedback are retained permanently as part of your learning record. The original raw submitted file, such as a screenshot, is retained in our instructor-facing lookup system for 30 days from submission, after which it is no longer accessible through that system — your grade and feedback are unaffected. Full detail is available in our Privacy Policy.

6.5 Academic Integrity

Submitted work must be your own, completed on your own lab environment. Submitting another person's work is a violation of these Terms and may result in account suspension.

7. Community, Live Sessions, and User Content

7.1 Community Guidelines

If you participate in community discussions, you agree to never post real client engagement data or details — community discussion is for lab work and coursework only — to provide genuine, complete answers rather than deliberately withholding help, and to follow any additional posted community guidelines. We may remove content or suspend community access for violations, at our discretion.

7.2 Live 1:1 Sessions

Live 1:1 sessions are not included in the subscription price and are arranged separately. If you would like a live session, contact thecipherlab.support@gmail.com to discuss availability and pricing. Requesting a session does not guarantee a specific time slot; sessions are provided subject to instructor availability.

7.3 Referral Program

If you refer a friend using your personal referral link, and they sign up and make their first successful payment as a genuinely new subscriber, we will extend your own subscription access by 30 days as a reward. Referral rewards are only granted for a friend's genuine first subscription — repeat, fraudulent, or self-referred signups do not qualify, and we may withhold or reverse a reward, and suspend referral-program access, where we reasonably suspect abuse. We do not currently limit how many friends you can refer.

7.4 Public Portfolio Content

Where the Service allows you to build a public-facing portfolio, such as for GitHub or public sharing as taught in the course, you are solely responsible for ensuring anything you publish outside the platform follows the sanitization and confidentiality standards taught in the course, and never includes real, non-lab client information.

8. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third-party providers, including Paystack for payment processing, Anthropic's Claude API for our AI tutor and automated grading, and third-party object storage and content delivery providers for hosting video lessons and assignment evidence. We do not store your full payment card details; these are handled directly by our payment processor. Your use of these integrated services is also subject to those providers' own terms.

9. Intellectual Property

All course content — including written curriculum, video lessons, diagrams, quizzes, and assignment rubrics — is the property of TheCipherLab or its licensors, and is provided to you for personal, non-commercial educational use only. You may not copy, redistribute, resell, or publicly republish course content.

10. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

The Service is provided "as is." We do not guarantee specific outcomes, including employment, certification success, or any particular career result. Timeline estimates, such as an estimated time to become job-ready, are illustrative estimates based on typical pacing, not guarantees. We do not guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at all times.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, TheCipherLab's total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the Service is limited to the total amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages. This limitation does not apply to liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law, including liability arising from our fraud or willful misconduct.

11. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service, with or without notice, for violation of these Terms — particularly Section 4 — or for non-payment. You may terminate your account at any time by cancelling your subscription and requesting account deletion at thecipherlab.support@gmail.com.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will make reasonable efforts to notify active subscribers of material changes. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Any dispute arising from these Terms is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Lagos State, Nigeria. Nothing in this section limits any statutory consumer protection rights you may have under the mandatory laws of your own country of residence, to the extent such laws apply and cannot be excluded by agreement.

14. Contact

Questions about these Terms can be sent to thecipherlab.support@gmail.com.
